SUKKAH TIPS

Buy an easy-to-build Sukkah

If you do not have the know-how or a halachically eligible pergola, you can purchase your own pop-up Sukkah, visit www.esrogheadquarters.com or www.sukkah.com.

(We are not affiliated with the above websites and do not make any commission from your purchase.)

Sukkah Building Tips

  • Check for Overhangs: Ensure no trees or roofs overhang the Sukkah, as this would invalidate it.

  • Build Walls First: For the Sukkah to be kosher, the walls must be constructed before placing the Sechach.

  • Who Can Build It: While the Sukkah doesn’t need to be built by a Jew, it must be constructed either specifically for Sukkot or for providing shade. Ideally, the Jew should be involved in the construction.

  • Sechach Placement: The Sechach must rest on materials suitable for its use, such as wood. It may not be resting on metal.

  • Wall Stability: The walls can be made from any material but must not sway more than a few inches in the wind. Some are careful to ensure the walls don’t move at all.

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Assemble your lulav bundle before the start of Yom Tov.

  2. Hold the lulav with the spine (smooth side) towards you and slide it into the center of the koishekle (holder).

  3. Place one ring around the holder and one or two rings on the lulav itself so that the lulav rustles slightly when shaken gently.

  4. When opening the plastic packages of Hadassim and Aravot, exercise caution and do not cut any leaves accidentally.

  5. Place the three Hadas branches (myrtle – small leaves, like eyes) into the right side of the holder with the tops around 4” below the top of the shidra (the part of the spine from where the topmost leaves emerge). TIP: Don't shove the hadassim and aravot into the Lulav holder! Rather, press down on the lulav holder to widen it and gently insert the branches. It's crucial that all the leaves remain attached.

  6. Place the two Arava branches (willow – long leaves, like lips) into the left side of the holder. Their tops should be a little lower than the tops of the hadassim.

  7. Tighten the rings.

OPTIONAL CARE FOR YOUR LULAV & ETROG

  1. Cut a rectangle of aluminum foil large enough to cover the willow and myrtle. Lay it flat and cover it with a slightly smaller paper towel or newspaper.

  2. Moisten the paper slightly and wrap the paper and foil around the lulav bundle.

  3. Place the lulav bundle in the plastic bag and store in a cool place, preferably the refrigerator.

  4. When not in use, keep the lulav bundle wrapped with moist paper/foil. Periodically moisten the paper.

  5. Keep the etrog in its plastic bag within the foam-lined box for extra freshness.
