KAPPAROT - כפרות

Kapparot is an important traditional ritual, which has been performed between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur throughout the Jewish world for over 1400 years.

Whilst for many this ritual consists of the use of a chicken, many others have the custom of doing this with charity money that amounts to the value of a chicken (some use multiples of 18 - Chai), which is then donated in its place with the same result achieved.

This custom should ideally be performed at home, find the instructions and text HERE

For those who won't otherwise be performing this custom, we are offering to do this on your behalf on Erev Yom Kippur, visit www.dortikvah.org/kapparot to sign up.

THE LAWS OF YOM KIPPUR

All activities that are forbidden on Shabbat are forbidden on Yom Kippur.

All adults over the age of Bar/Bat Mitzvah are also biblically obligated to abstain from the following five activities from 6:47 pm on Wednesday 10/1, until 7:46 pm on Thursday 10/2:

1. All eating and drinking. Those with a medical condition that could deteriorate and endanger their lives as a result of fasting are exempt from fasting on Yom Kippur. If eating or drinking is necessary, it should be done in measured amounts at specific intervals. Consult the Rabbi for detailed guidance and advice.

We offer FastAid slow-release caffeine, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen (Tylenol) tablets. The pills begin releasing after 10-12 hours and continue for 12 hours. Suggested donation $10 per dose, all proceeds benefit the Kollel of Toronto. Visit or contact the office to purchase.

2. Any washing for pleasure (we wash only until our knuckles for Netilat Yadayim), soiled hands may be rinsed in cold water

3. Wearing leather footwear

4. The application of oils and creams to the body

5. Marital relations (the restrictions of niddah are observed)

KOL NIDREI & YIZKOR APPEAL

As we enter Yom Kippur, we ask for your partnership in sustaining Dor Tikvah.

Your Kol Nidrei pledge supports our programs, security, youth, Torah learning, and the new mikvah. Please make a meaningful gift today at dortikvah.org/kn to help our community grow in strength, spirit, and connection.

Every gift counts - we are aiming for 100% participation!

The complete list of contributors will be published after Sukkot.

During Yizkor on Yom Kippur, we ask that in the merit of the charity we will give (or have given) in memory of our loved ones, their neshama should be elevated.

Your Kol Nidrei donation (of any amount) also fulfils your Yizkor pledge!

The next Dor Tikvah Yizkor Booklet will be printed for Shavuot 5786/2026.

If you would like to list the names of loved ones in the upcoming edition, please note them in the donation comments or email info@dortikvah.org.

The current edition of the booklet can be viewed here.

We are grateful to Marcie and David Rosenberg for sponsoring the 2025-2026 edition of the Yizkor Book in memory of Ira Rosenberg and Michael Cohan.
