TUESDAY NIGHT, March 31 - The Night of Erev Pesach

Bedikat Chametz / The Search for Chametz - On the eve of the fourteenth of Nissan i.e., after 8:17 PM, one is required to search their home and domains for all Chametz. (Read more about this here.) The printable blessing and post-search nullification can be found here.

Make sure to submit your Chametz Sale Form by Tuesday night. The form can be easily submitted online here.

WEDNESDAY, April 1 - Erev Pesach

Taanit Bechorot / Fast of the Firstborns - It is a widespread custom for firstborns to fast on the day before Pesach. This commemorates the miracle that spared the firstborn Jewish sons from the final plague. As is customary, we will host a Siyum (with bagels, lox, and cream cheese) after 7:00 AM Shacharit. This enables the firstborns present to continue to eat for the rest of the day. (Read more about this here.)

Mechirat Chametz / Chametz Sale -  The Rabbi will sell your Chametz to a non-Jew at 10:00 AM in his office.

Sof Zman Achilat Chametz / Chametz-Eating Deadline: 10:54 AM - The absolute deadline for eating chametz is two Halachic hours before midday. We should also brush our teeth before this time. (Read more about this here.)

Sof Zman Biur Chametz / Chametz-Owning Chametz: 12:09 PM - On the morning before Pesach, before the fifth Halachic hour, we burn (or destroy) all the chametz that was found during the search and anything that was left over from breakfast and not sold to the non-Jew. This is the time when the prohibition to own Chametz comes into effect. (Read more about this here.)

The post-burn nullification can be found here.

You can also burn your Chametz in the Dor Tikvah Parking lot from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.

We have scheduled a special garbage collection at Dor Tikvah. Dispose of your remaining Chametz in our big blue dumpster before 11:00 am. This will help ensure that no unsold Chametz remains on your property after Chametz ownership becomes prohibited.

Issur Melacha / Forbidden Work - Various categories of work are forbidden on Erev Pesach after Halachic midday at 1:24 PM. These include haircuts, shaving, and laundry. (Read more about this here.)

Dollars

Ma'ot Chitim - Wheat Money

It is a widespread custom to give money (Kimcha D'Pischa) to help the less fortunate have provisions for Pesach.

Donate online to the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund.

The money will be distributed to locals in need (עניי עירך).

Pink Blossom

Birkat Ha’ilanot: Blessing for Blossoming Trees

The Talmud (Berachot 43b) and Halacha instruct us to say a special blessing when we see trees blossoming in the month of Nissan.

THE TEXT OF THE BERACHA:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה י–הוה אֱ–לֹהֵינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם שֶׁלֹּא חִסֵּר בְּעוֹלָמוֹ כְּלוּם וּבָרָא בּוֹ בְּרִיּוֹת טוֹבוֹת וְאִילָנוֹת טוֹבוֹת לְהִתְנָאוֹת בָּהֶן בְּנֵי אָדָם.

TRANSLITERATION: Baruch Ata Ado-nai, E-loheinu Melech Ha'olam shelo chisair b'olamo k'loom, uvara vo briyot tovot v’ilanot tovim l’hitna’ot bahen b’nei adam.

TRANSLATION: Blessed are You, G-d, our Lord, King of the Universe, that His world is not lacking anything, and He created in it good creations and good trees for the pleasure of mankind.

Download a printable version here.

This blessing can be made outside Dor Tikvah, to the left of the main entrance. The blossoming trees are marked below (in red), look out for the budding sprouts!

NOTE: The blessing should ideally be said on more than one tree, and not on Shabbat.
